Artist Spotlight
Sylvia Bennett
Sylvia Bennett, the Grammy-nominated pop-jazz singer-songwriter visits Jim to celebrate her new holiday single “Baby It’s Cold Outside!” Listen to her interview with Jim below.
Jim Brickman: One of the best things about Christmas on the Jim Brickman show is sharing music with you during the holiday season, and today is no exception! We are talking to our Artist Spotlight with Sylvia Bennett, who is a grammy-nominated recording artist and songwriter! You’ve had so many hits and so many great collaborations, Barry Gibb and David Brenner, Dizzy Gillespie, wow! And you were discovered by Lionel Hampton, that’s amazing.
Sylvia Bennett: It really is amazing, I think it was a lifesaving experience when Lionel took me under his wing and kinda validated who I was as a performer.
Jim Brickman: You’ve got a brand new single out, a duet with Paul Brown called “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” you decided to do your jazz-pop version of that classic, so this is part of a way to celebrate the holidays through music for you.
Sylvia Bennett: Absolutely. First of all, I’ve got to tell you that Christmastime is one of my favorite times of the whole year, I think that if he had the love and joy of christmastime around the whole year we’d be much better off as people, don’t you think?
Jim Brickman: Peace and love and joy, why is it only November to December that we share that with people? So tell me a bit about your experiences with music at the holiday time and why it’s so special for you.
Sylvia Bennett: I have to tell you that we always look for new holiday music, and a friend of mine, Sandy Shore, who’s the founder and president of smoothjazz.com, thought that “baby it’s cold outside” would be a great duet for me and Paul Brown to record together. This is an unusual song for me to do during Christmas, I usually do things, you know, the traditional ones like The Christmas Song, Jingle Bells, songs that are more into the classic Christmas song. But what I like about this Christmas song is that we’ve taken a standard and put it in this beautiful new modern setting.
