Sally’s Corner
To celebrate Mother’s Day, we’re sharing some of the best “Sally’s Corner” articles with you. Sally Brickman, Jim’s mother, writes an article in the monthly newsletter, so we’ve gone through the archives and found some of the best to share with you.
Let Your Child Fly
Today there was a review in the Chicago Tribune of the fabulous musical Billy Elliot which has just hit Chicago. In the article, the critic said, “The message of Billy Elliot is a primer for adults on the moral imperative of getting behind their children, whomever they may be and whatever they may want to do.” Even the composer of the score of that show admits to being teary eyed at the magnificent ending.
And what does this have to do with Jim Brickman?? Everything! Coincidentally, just yesterday I went to the jimbrickman.com website (which I check occasionally to see what city my son is in), and on the first page was Jim’s article on the Song of the Week, If You Believe. Jim wrote, “My mom believed in me and encouraged me. Now I play If You Believe in almost every concert as a kind of good luck charm, and in dedication to my mom’s encouragement that got me where I am today.” I emailed James to say how his words meant to me.
I have to say that at the time James was growing up, I really did not consciously allow him to follow his dream. It just never occurred to me to do otherwise. I fail to understand why some parents force their children against their grain into activities that they are not suited for, and fail to support and “let them fly” (as the Tribune critic also said of Billy Elliot). For all of you young parents out there, I strongly advise you not to stand in the way of your children’s talents and interests.
And try to see the spell binding musical, Billy Elliott.
